Bucket lift in closed well

|
Diagram by Erik Nissen Peterson.
A rope, calabash (bucket), and windlass have been used for centuries to lift water from wells. Unfortunately they are a source of pollution because the top of the well is open and the water container is frequently set down on a contaminated surface. An improvement would be a bucket with a hose attached to the bottom and to an outlet at the wellhead. When the bucket is lifted, water is discharged from the outlet while the top of the well remains covered.
