Return to Water in Africa

This is a common toilet in Mali. It is located outdoors and is surrounded by mud walls. The floor is concrete with a hole that empties into a pit. When not in use, the pit is covered to keep flies from entering. Instead of toilet paper, Malians use a plastic container filled with water to cleanse themselves.
