Return to Water in Africa

Nicknamed "Kingdom in the Sky," Lesotho is the only country with all of its land situated more than 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above sea level. Two major mountain ranges divide the country from the northeast to the southwest. Equally striking are the multicolored layers of earth strata in the lowlands, made visible by erosion. The seasons are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere: winter occurs from June to September, and summer from December to March. —Daniel Phillips
